Richard W. Sagebiel
With sadness and love, we announce that our beloved husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather Richard Wallace Sagebiel passed away on February 6, 2023. Richard was born in Ohio in 1934. He married the love of his life, Daisy, and had three sons and four granddaughters. This Renaissance man devoted his life to family, medicine, classical music, opera, tennis, travel, and a deep wonder in and intellectual interest of the wide world, especially if Mozart could be playing in the background. He ran the melanoma clinic at UCSF for roughly 30 years and continued to be active in researching melanoma treatments while at CPMC. His colleagues and patients alike always spoke of his kindness, his attention to patient needs, and his devotion to not only the practice of medicine but also the practice of loving care of people.
Richard loved sinking his hands into the rich soil of life. On too many hikes, cross country ski trips, and sailing excursions to count, his mantra was always, let’s just go around the next corner there might be a view! He instilled this sense of seeking the beauty of life and adventuring into everything and everyone he encountered. The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Marin Shakespeare Company, where he acted as a board member and an always enthusiastic audience member. He once said, “‘the seven ages of man’ is real. Ask Jaques or King Lear.” Marin Shakespeare Company Donations may be made at marinshakespeare.org/donate. Other donations may be made to the melanoma clinic. Please use the following URL for any online gifts: www.cpmc.org/givenow-cancer.
