Leonard W. Smith

Leonard W. Smith died on January 21, 2024, at home in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Following two years in the U.S. Army, Leonard attended the University of Michigan Law School and became a lawyer. After a brief career practicing law, he became involved in philanthropy for the rest of his working career. Leonard served a President and Chairman of the Skillman Foundation where he was a recognized leader in dedicating resources to improving lives of children in Detroit. After retiring in that role, Leonard became Board Chairman and Chief Financial Officer of the Flinn Foundation dealing with mental health issues in Michigan. He was avid sports fan and played hockey, squash, and tennis throughout his life in addition to following University of Michigan football and the Detroit Red Wings. His wife Nancy survives.
