Richard J. Eckart, Jr.

Richard J. Eckart, Jr., or “Dick” as he was more affectionately known, died peacefully in the early morning hours of July 23, 2023 in Rochester, NY. He was just shy of his 90th birthday.

Richard was born in Nyack, NY to Mary and Richard Eckart and spent most of his childhood in Englewood, NJ with his parents and sister Emmy.

After graduating from Yale University, Richard spent two years with the Yale-China Association teaching English at New Asia College in Hong Kong. His experience led him to a religious calling, and on his return he attended the Virginia Theological Seminary.

Richard devoted his life to The Episcopal Church, where he served as a clergyman in Washington, DC; Syracuse, NY; and finally at St. Mark’s and St. John’s in Rochester, NY. He also served as chaplain for the Groton School in MA; St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Jackson, MS; and the Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

Following his retirement, Richard traveled the world with his wife, Renate, and oftentimes his grandson, Trevor. He spent summers at the family cottage in Thousand Island Park, NY, where he enjoyed sailing and motoring his antique Hutchinson boat on the St. Lawrence River.

Richard is survived by his loving family: Renate, his wife of 62 years, as well as his daughter Amy, son Michael, and grandson Trevor.

The family will hold a private service later this year.
