John M. McCarthy

John Michael April 9, 1927-January 23, 2013. Died peacefully surrounded by his family at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC. Beloved husband of Mary Hickey McCarthy. Loving father of Stephen McCarthy, Neil McCarthy, Tara McCarthy and Laurette McCarthy. Wonderful Father-in-Law to Kathleen O’Keefe McCarthy, Elizabeth Monaco McCarthy, Orrin Wood and Harold Baker. Cherished grandfather to MaryKate McCarthy, Kevin McCarthy and Kaitlin Wood. John served in World War II with the US Army and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Francis College in 1951 and a Masters in Business Administration from New York University Graduate School of Business in 1953. Prior to his retirement in May 1992, Mr. McCarthy served as a Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Lord Abbett and Company and during his thirty-two years with the firm his responsibilities included the role of Senior Research Analyst and a Director of Research. From 1951-59, he was a Trust Officer at First National City Bank, providing securities analysis for the Investment Department. In addition to being a trustee of the Securities Industry Association, founder and former president of the Electrical-Electronic Analysts Group, a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, John served as a Group Vice Chairman for the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, was a past trustee of Winthrop-University Hospital on Long Island and St. Francis College in Brooklyn, a board member of the Family Rosary of the Holy Cross Family Ministries, a member of the Board of Directors of Smith Affiliated Capital Corp, a founder/member of the Board of Trustees of The Mary A. and John M. McCarthy Foundation, a member of The New York Athletic Club and The Cherry Valley Club. The family will receive friends on Friday January 25th from 7-9pm and Saturday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home, 1076 Madison Avenue at 81st Street (no visitation on Sunday, January 27). Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10am on Monday January 28th at the Church of St. John the Martyr, 250 East 72nd Street, NYC. In lieu of flowers, the McCarthy family requests that gifts in memory of John’s legacy and life be made to St. Francis College at 180 Remsen Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 or to Holy Cross Family Ministries at 518 Washington Street, North Easton, MA 02356.
